1Lt. James Goforth

Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, the 6-foot, 200-pound James Goforth had been a dual athlete at the University of Kentucky, playing both football and basketball. He excelled in the latter, and was known to be one of the school’s star players. Graduating in 1937, he then taught school and coached in the Black Star Coal Camp town in Alva, Kentucky.
He married a local girl named Nancy Bell Offutt on October 9, 1943, who followed him ultimately to California before he departed from Camp Pendleton with K Company for combat service overseas.
